Stages
New product ideas can seem complicated to define because of the complexity and different stages that the idea may be in. What we have done is narrow the field to 4 basic categories that an idea be classified in and the different stages of idea development.
1. An Idea for a new product.
An idea in this category can be defined as an idea in which no one has ever thought of or does not exist in the marketplace.
2. An improvement to an existing product.
The idea in this category can be designed as an improvement, modification, additional feature, a different type of manufacturing material, different size. Most ideas fall into this category.
3. A patent.
Ideas in this category have had assistance from a registered patent attorney who has filed the idea with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). The patent may be pending or granted.
4. A Manufactured product.
Ideas in this category have gone through the manufacturing process and the owner has inventory, but not a distribution channel to push the product to the marketplace.
Phases
Every product starts as an idea. Depending on the individual with the idea, their idea may fall into one of the many phases of development process.

- An idea that was written out in word form.
- An idea that is only a rough sketch.
- An idea that is in the research phase.

- An idea that is in the engineering phase.
- An idea that is in the prototyping phase.
